If you spend your days doing cost analysis work, your three biggest problems are most likely:
      1. Lack of data.
      2. Lack of data.
      3. Lack of data.
You will be happy to know, that there is an effort underway to remedy this problem.   More and more contracts now require contractors to provide Contactor Cost Data Reports (CDDRs).  These reports are specifically designed to collect the data we need to help us with future cost estimates.

The main repository for this data will be the Defense Automated Cost Information Management System (DACIMS).  DACIMS is an Internet-based cost research library.  You can wander around in it, looking at what's available, or you can do a search for specific words or phrases.

Besides CDDRs, DACIMS contains:
    • Independent Cost Estimates
    • Program Office and Service Cost Estimates
    • CAIG Reports
    • Cost Analysis Requirement Descriptions (CARDs)
    • Software Metric Data
    • Cost Growth Data
    • Defense Economic Data
    • and more.
DACIMS is new, and not fully loaded yet, but there is a lot data in it --- maybe some data you can use in your current study.

Rich Bazzy has suggested that we all become acquainted with DACIMs.  You can become one of the "elite" who are certified to use DACIMS, by following the steps below:

Obtaining Access to DACIMS:
    1. Go to http://crs.pae.osd.mil (the CDDR Project Office Website).
    2. Click on CDDR Data Access on the left.
    3. Click on Online Access on the left.
    4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on DACIMS Registration.
    5. Click on Cost Analyst.
    6. Fill out the registration form and click on Submit.
In 3-5 days, you will receive your certificate and password along with instructions on how to load your certificate into your browser and access DACIMS.

Note:  Your certificate will be installed on the browser on your PC.  Registration must be completed using Netscape 4.6 or Internet Explorer 6.0 with 128 bit encryption.    See Dave Daniszewski if you need help.
